Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join?

All you need to do to join is show up at a rehearsal during open enrollment (see “What is open enrollment?” below). You can let us know you’re coming if you’d like to, but you don’t have to.

If you have any dietary restrictions, it would be helpful to reach out a few days before your first rehearsal so we make sure we have food for you when you start.

What is open enrollment?

All Proud Theater chapters begin their season with an open enrollment period. During the open enrollment period, any youth interested in joining can simply show up to a rehearsal or several rehearsals with no commitment necessary to see if they want to stay through the season. Interested youth do not need to contact directors or staff prior to attending an open enrollment rehearsal, though we will definitely answer any questions if you would like to ask them prior to attending rehearsal.

Do I need any theater experience?

Nope! Many Proud Theater youth haven’t had any theater experience before they join. We teach you along the way in a low-stress environment. Our storytelling process is very approachable, whether you’ve been on or behind stage for years or if you’re anxious about acting, public speaking, or writing.

Are there auditions, applications, or fees to join?

Nope! We’re happy to have you and don’t want to put up any barriers.

If your family is in a position to support us, we welcome your donations or your time. But we don’t expect either, and we won’t turn you away.

Is food provided?

Note: COVID-19 may impact food offerings. Reach out to your chapter staff if you have questions or to see if food will be provided.
Food is provided at each rehearsal. We try to accommodate dietary restrictions, but note that it may be best to contact chapter staff in advance to let them know about any dietary restrictions or bring your own meal to your first rehearsal so that staff are prepared to accommodate you. We are more than willing to; we just want to make sure we have enough time to provide a good option for you!

Can you provide transportation?

We generally cannot provide transportation to rehearsals. If this is a barrier to joining, please contact chapter staff to discuss what options there may be.

Is regular attendance mandatory?

We understand that some youth may have occasional scheduling conflicts with rehearsals. However, commitment to attendance is taken into consideration for casting. Please try to attend as consistently as you can, and contact mentors to let them know if you can’t make it/will be late to rehearsal.

Are there conflicts with school schedules?

There may occasionally be opportunities for additional performances at schools, events, or workplaces that conflict with school schedules. In these cases, attendance is not mandatory and permission slips are required.

Do you always meet at the same time every week?

Rehearsal schedules are generally consistent, but may vary during the year. Make sure to carefully read rehearsal schedules provided to you or ask your chapter’s mentor team if you’re unsure.

I have another question that isn’t answered here.

Please get in contact with us; we are more than willing to help!
