Recently, the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights finalized a rule that removes protections for queer and trans people in health care and health insurance. This is part of a larger trend of insisting that existing protections against sex discrimination do not protect people on the basis of gender identity or sexual or romantic orientation. Currently, there are no explicit protections for queer and trans people in federal law, and there are no explicit protections against discrimination for trans people at the state level in Wisconsin. This expansion of the ability to discriminate must end.
Join Wausau Transfam Alliance and Art & Soul Innovations on Saturday, June 20th at 1pm for the Rally for Trans Rights. The rally will take place at Yawkey Park in downtown Wausau (320 Grant Street; across from Wausau City Hall). We will have speakers talk about what this change means, and about what we can do locally and in Wisconsin. This change impacts all queer people, but is likely to impact trans people the most.
Public health is extremely important. We expect participants to adhere to social distancing guidelines and wear a mask due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Extra masks will be given to those who arrive without one.
